Trigger Happy (live analog mix)

I'm not really good at long, flowery, and well worded fanciful promotional e-mails that take the reader on a voyage of the soul, but right now I wish that I was. I feel like a moron, I mean, I don't even have a theme, it ought to have been about the magickal spirits from the realm of the fairies, there ought to be some good ways to adapt a costume to the theme, you know, some way to make a sexy costume that has furry leg warmers, arm warmers, and wings, yet says (cut and paste the appropriate theme) all over it. For me it has been about solving problems, technical problems, compositional problems, performance problems.. I mean, after we invented the instrument, we had to figure out how to play it. Sadly, the problem with problems is that unless Janis Joplin has them, they aren't very sexy.

So anyway, Spiral Blaster has got some more FREE music for you all, 100% original, 100% live electronics, and NO LAPTOP computers. This has taken all of our combined wits, pocket change, time, and emotional stability to create this music, and its yours for free either by downloading directly from our podcast page:
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Diplo (Fools Gold, Philadelphia – www.myspace.com/diplo): There are few DJs or producers on planet earth who have accomplished as much in as little time as Wes Pentz. From the art-scene at the Guggenheim in New York, to the bullet-riddled favelas of Rio di Janeiro to the sweat-soaked streets of Bombay and Bangladesh, Diplo has redefined the concept of “world music”. His merger of electronic backbeats, international rhythms, obscure influences and uncompromising vocals defined a sound, a style, and wildly successful series of releases known as Hollertronix. He spent years circling the globe with London superstar MC M.I.A. in a collaboration that broke down genre walls and dropped a few political bombs as well. He is credited with bringing Brazil’s Baile Funk sound to the US, reworking “Dirty South instrumentality into high art” (Now Magazine) and challenging every commonly held notion about Djs and producers. Recently he confounded the Fools Gold label with Nick Catchdubs as a vehicle for further aural mayhem. He estimates that his own tracks and reworks comprise more than 80% of his sets, and the energy he puts into these tracks is only matched by the energy he unleashes while performing them. On New Years Eve at Temple, he will play an exclusive 2 hour set beginning at the stroke of midnight.

DJ Rekha (Basement Bhangra, NYC – www.myspace.com/djrheka) DJ Rekha is celebrating the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, DJ REKHA presents BASEMENT BHANGRA (named after her world famous long running NY monthly party) Born in London, proudly raised in New York, Rekha Malhotra is a cultural instigator who’s established herself as a musical pioneer and community activist. Newsweek recognized her as one of the most influential South Asians in the US, and she has been praised by The New York Times, CNN, The Fader, Village Voice, and The Washington Post, among others. She has been relentless in her mission to bring South Asian Music and Culture to New York by spinning at events like P.S. 1’s Warm Up Series, Central Park’s Summerstage, Soundlab and Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturdays as well as her own parties including Mutiny, Bollywood Disco and the incredibly popular Basement Bhangra. She is known for her extraordinary musical range and was even chosen by documentarian Sarah Jones to work on the Obie Winning show “Bridge and Tunnel.” Rekha was also picked to be Associate Producer and Music Supervisor for the NPR Documentary “Feet in Two Worlds.” DJ Rekha’s talents further extend into her own production company Sangament, which produces live concerts and provides specialized music consulting services to numerous businesses in the record industry.

Pharrell (Fluokids, Paris – www.fluokids.com) Pharrell is the "CEO" of the european audioblog "fluokids", at 23 years old he already has his own residence on the french national radio, played with most of the major artist of the new electronic scene, opened for Justice on their last French tour, and promotes the monthly 'panik' party in Paris. Behind the decks, he's not just runnin' the dancefloor hits of the moment, he always try to bring some new stuff, from his first techno feelings to the last electronic bangers.

Nick Catchdubs (Fools Gold, NYC – www.myspace.com/nickcatchdubs) Nick Catchdubs is a Brooklyn-based DJ and co-founder of the Fool's Gold record label. For the past four years he's been playing shows with the likes of MIA, Spank Rock and the Clipse, and rocking parties around the globe with a mix of hip hop, electro, dancehall, rock and more.

Motion Potion (the Fringe/ Mutaytor, SF – www.myspace.com/motionpotion)
The “Dj for people who hate Djs” (SFWeekly) seems to have something for everyone. Funk impresario, mashup enthusiast, and live collaborator with Parliament-Funkadelic, Rebirth Brass Band and the turntablist for the 45-piece indie techno circus known as the Mutaytor. His career has been an attempt to break down genre and scene barriers, playing every conceivable kind of music in the course of a night, a set, or a seven-minute mash-up. His productions aim to unify the dance club and the concert hall with juicy, listening music (rock and funk) arrayed over breakbeats. His mix CD's range wider than most label's catalogs; live mixes that range from underground hip hop to electronic breaks to world fusion to rare southern rock (downloadable at www.musicv2.com/artist/motion_potion). The common denominator seems to be "the funk" whether it be funky urban electronic breaks, funky underground hip hop, funky nu-school rock and electroclash, or just plain sho'nuff motherfunkin' FUNK.

DJ Richie Panic (Robot Rock/Frisco Disco –www.myspace.com/richiepanicisagod) Richie Panic has been one of the foremost innovators on the SF DJ scene for years now. His “Frisco Disco” party at the old Arrow Bar with Jeffrodesiac was one of the few local weeklies that deserved to be called “legendary”. From rock to punk to disco to house to ghetto-tech to becoming one of the city’s foremost tastemakers and an absolute authority on electroclash, Richie Panic is a San Francisco institution.

Eric Sharp (Rockit Science/Pacific Sound - www.myspace.com/ericsharp A staple of the San Francisco hosue scene, Eric Sharp seems to be anywhere and everywhere. From “Rockit Science” warehouse parties to the city’s most notable clubs, Eric drops every flavor of house under the sun. What sets him apart is his infectious enthusiasm for music and nightlife. Eric loves the hell out of life, music and probably you too; which is evident anytime you bump into him, or when you’re lucky enough to hear him spin.

Miss Toats & Richard Oh? (Big Stereo –www.myspace.com/bigstereosucks) Hosts of the weekly Tuesday night “Big Stereo” parties at Pink in the Mission, Miss Toats & Richard Oh?!! Make musical waves by staying ahead of the grain. Electro, rock, house, disco: the choicest cuts, the dopest downloads, the most haphazard fashion can all . It’s the music they take seriously, not themselves.

Janaka Selecta (Dhamaal - www. myspace.com/janakaselekta) For more than 5 years, Janaka Selekta organized and took part in some of the most groundbreaking underground musical gatherings in the Bay Area. The Dhamaal collective parties, taking place at Club 6 merged classical live Indian music with the most modern electronic beats, as well as South Asian fashion, cuisine, and artwork. In addition to Dhamaal \ Janaka has organized the massive “Worldly” parties, hosting international superstars like State of Bengal, Karsh Kale, General Midi and Cheb I Sabbah as well as weekly Outerworldly parties at Madrone Lounge. Janaka is an expert at South Asian and international breaks, house and drum and bass and diwali.

EGR Records presents Diverge 8.17.07

When: Friday August 17th, 2007
Where: Soma / SF
Cost: $7 presale; $10 at the door.

Note; please buy a presale ticket (info at the bottom of this post), but if you must arrive at the door email catharsis@egregious.net for pertinent event information.

It is time to diverge for an evening of darker beats with several of North Americas leading talents. EGR Records invites you back to our studio, called "The Bubble"... There have been many improvements since the last event including a dance floor and a new 1080p projector..

The main sound system is yet to be installed at The Bubble, but we'll be rocking out to an 8.2 EAW 2D surround array powered by Periphony Systems technology.

For Diverge I'm quite happy to be working with several local and national/international DJs/producers:

Time Performer Affiliation
9pm to 10pm Disfigured Hipsters, SF
10pm to 11pm Xeyes deBASSer; SF
11pm to 12am Catharsis EGR Records; SF
12am to 1:30am Matt K. Omerta / Niytrus; Atlanta
1:30am to 3am Gunjack (live PA) Omerta / Niytrus; Mexico City
3am to 4am Orgnsm Iom, Konstrukt; SF

Genres represented will range from techno to hard techno, hardcore, & powernoise. It's quite nice to have Matt K and Gunjack back out here to SF to share recent work with their label called Omerta.. This is some of North Americas best hard techno. Gunjack will be dropping a live mixed media audio/video set; don't miss it!

Artist Bios:

Disfigured Hipsters
Back again to open up the night are the Disfigured Hipsters.. They'll be testing out some new tracks, so come early and give them a listen.

Xeyes
Xeyes is the head of a new outfit in town called deBASSer. Back in the day he was quite the techno head and we welcome him to bring it out at Diverge..

Catharsis
Catharsis' first experience with electronic music occurred during the early to mid 90's in the San Francisco industrial scene. Genres ranging from no wave, classic EBM, to electro-industrial provided early inspiration and a stomping ground that would later translate into a larger appreciation for all edgy EDM genres; most notably hard techno/powernoise/hardcore and the resulting synthesis -- industrial-techno. He heads up EGR Records, so give him a hug or pat on the back.. ;P

Gunjack:
Much in demand as a producer, Gunjack is a part of the third generation of techno to come out of Detroit in the early 90s. Brian Gibbs AKA Gunjack is the founder of the prolific DEAFMOSAIC imprint, owner/founder of the Gunjack Collectors Series and co-founder of the Gameface imprint and has records on many international labels besides performing all over the world. From Tresor, Berlin to Womb, Tokyo, Emotion Club in Madrid, to exclusive loft parties in Detroit and San Francisco, this is an artist who is known throughout the world for uncompromising production and a prolific body of work. Beginning with the classic Outlands single on Sheep records (remixed by Mark Broom), Gunjack has developed an impressive discography and many loyal fans across the globe. From hearing ..Consume or be Consumed.. on the I LOVE TECHNO compilation in 2004, to "Rokugo" on British radio, ..Rules of Engagement.. on television breaks, to noise and art exhibitions in Mexico City; one can not escape the music of this well established and legendary producer.

Matt K.:
For over 6 years now, Matt K has been producing the felonious bass crushing tunes that keep the dance floors shaking with his unique style of "Gangsta-Tech", the fusion of mayhem, violence, and ass rattling grooves. Reprehensibly hard, and deplorably infectious, his skill and determination seethe through with every performance. His previous collaborations have netted airplay on the notorious Radio 1, as well as receiving positive feedback from the likes of Carl Cox & Chris Liberator. Check out his new mini-album with fellow rioter, Gunjack, entitled "Street Justice" due out as a part of the Gunjack Collectors Series.

Orgnsm:
Orgnsm blends dark trance with more abrasive beats and has hosted several local events in the iom series.. Be sure to stay late and catch his set!

This event is $7 (+$0.65 surcharge) and there are 85 presale tickets available.. You can get on the guest list by remitting payment via Paypal (credit card or paypal account) link at the bottom of the event web page. Please include your email for event correspondence:
www.egregious.net/events/2007/diverge/

If you plan on arriving at the door send an email to catharsis@egregious.net, so that you may receive more information regarding the event.

Where is the best place in the SF area for a techno-freak to move?

Hello all! I am moving from the Seattle area to SF in three months I am looking for some suggestions on where to move. Rent has to be within 1grand-ish range for a room and reasonably unsketchy. I don't drive, so it's gotta be somewhere where I can access the nightlife.
Cheers,
_Millet

Fumiya Tanaka will be playing from 1-4 PM with door costs going down to $10 after 2:00. Here's a primer on what looks to be the most exciting act to play in SF since Jeff Mills last November:

Jason Emsley, Live in San Francisco on 4.20 (You Tube Video links)

California's own, Jason Emsley's, has been a hot ticket on the minimal techno circuit over the past few months due to his heavy hitting releases on European techno labels Platzhirsch and Telegraph.

Friday marks his first SF appearance, fresh from headlining parties in Germany with techno legends such as Monolake.

Catch his two laptop set at Midnight on Friday at the Werks. 4.20 - 111 Minna.

Jason Emsley (Platzhirsch/Telegraph/LA)
www.discogs.com/artist/Jason+Emsley

Bio:

In less than year of deciding to go the production route, Jason picked up steam releasing his first tracks simultaneously on French label, 'Telegraph' and the highly touted German label 'Platzhirsch'...followed by remixes for German 'Nummer' and England's 'Clever Music' as well as on LA's label 'Droid Recordings'. Jason's 2nd solo EP on Platzhirsch (released in October) has received amazingly complimentary reviews and is being played by many of the heavy hitters.

2007 has already with a 3rd solo ep completed and forthcoming on Platzhirsch this Spring, following a month's mini-tour in Europe.

Additionally, expect to see Jason releasing his first full length artist album on the same label later in the year. Others to look out for in the first quarter are a solo ep on 'Clever Music' and remixes for Chicago's 'Siteholder'...

Finally, the end of 2007 will see the launch of Jason's own label project 'Align-Audio' featuring another side of his development as an electronic artist.

http://mesmerizationfoundation.com/spiralblaster/

Hi, sorry about the randomness of this posting, Spiral Blaster is a New York based Techno duo, and we would love to get a little feedback from you kids out west. We use an MPC Sampler and a Serge Modular Analogue Sythesizer as the core of our rig, and we use a little Delay box too, but that's all. This is a live show from 3.21.07, just this past wednesday, so the material is brand spanking new, and I wanted to use this global village syndrome of tribe to bounce these ideas off of y'all.

interesting Detroit event in SF featuring UR and Drexciya

oddly enough, this is the same night as the Hi-Tech Soul movie and party with Derrick May. Detroit invades SF!

Interrogating Ideas:
Mirror-Travel in the Motor City

A conversation between Edgar Arceneaux
and Julian Myers

Friday, February 23, 2007
8 pm
$10 general, $8 students and members

Langton’s new lecture series Interrogating Ideas presents Mirror-Travel in the Motor City, a conversation between Los Angeles-based artist Edgar Arceneaux and San Francisco-based writer Julian Myers.

The artist and writer will put forward passages from their ongoing investigation of subterranean Detroit, including discussions of Michael Heizer’s 1971 earthwork Dragged Mass; the buried basement under a park on Clairmont and Rosa Parks Boulevard where the urban riots of 1967 began; Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto’s 1966 single “In the Basement” and the “Submerge’d” afro-futuristic worlds of Underground Resistance and Drexciya.

The presenters will delve below the surface of Detroit’s ruined modernity in order to explore the grottos of its vibrant underground.
The conversation will be followed by a reception with the special appearance of DJ Ian Zazueta spinning “Detroit sounds.” The DJs sound has been influenced by techno music that emerged in Detroit in the mid-1980’s, when DJs produced tracks in their basements using analog synthesizers and drum machines. Literally underground, this music is distinguished by the use of repetitive metallic and machine noises that conjure the automotive plants of Detroit.

Interrogating Ideas aims to expose the Bay Area art community to some of the most challenging discussions about contemporary art practice today. The invitees to these public conversations share a fascination for exploring ideas, and expanding their practice into a performative intellectual event.

Anyone want to go and see Jeff Mills this Saturday night.....

Hey Everyone,

I have an extra ticket to see The legendary Jeff Mills at Mighty's in SF. I am new to the scene in SF but have spent many years in Detroit, Chicago, and Honolulu. I am also a house and tech house dj. I have been living in SF for six months now and attending The Academy of Art University. I am finding it really hard to meet friends and get into the dance music scene. Let me know if you would like a ticket at only 15 dollars. It is the first time that Jeff Mills is playing in SF so you know it is going to be a great show. If you want to know more about me you can look at my profile. Call me at 415-671-5459 if you would like to go.

Peace,scene
Tony

Join the biggest names in the dance music community raising funds for NextAid! Our goal to raise $20,000 will benefit the continuing development of our earth-friendly child support center in Dennilton, South Africa.

We're auctioning off everything from top DJ and studio gear, music production software, midi sample and loop libraries, flyer design and recording studio services, to once-in-a-lifetime experiences with your favorite artists! Also note that a generous private donor will be matching all proceeds, so your winning bid will go twice as far as it would otherwise. Seriously, there are some great deals available and it's for a great cause to boot!

New techno-minimal-dub hybrid - TESH

Heard of this one yet? James Patrick and Someone Else's Sean O' Neil came up with this term since "Minimal" isn't really Minimal anymore. House and techno don't quite hit it either.

Make sure and hit Club Six's Dark Room this Friday for a marathon James Patrick DJ set.
We'll be doing Sketch-no and Tesh aka 'drug music' till 4:00 am.

Here's an excerpt from the Sean O'Neil interview:

www.rhythmism.com/features/

Im pretty sick of people labeling music these days with all the million sub-genres. "Like when people say " I play minimal, tech-trance overlayed with housey deep elements… Yuck. What do you have to say to these jokers? What do you call your music? I hope its not Epic!

Well yeah, it's sort of a problem. We call this genre of music "minimal techno," but it's not really minimal at all. In a way, it's maximal.

It's just a term that stuck, and it's hard to say to people, "I play minimal techno." To uneducated dumb-dumbs, this simply means that I play boring rave music. Minimal equals boring to a lot people. I guess the label "minimal tech-house" would be more technically accurate. But yeah, the labels are not necessary -- and in many cases, misleading. But what are you gonna do? There's no other word for it. Bruno Pronsato and James Patrick like to refer to quality minimal techno as "tesh." I suppose that works.

When people ask me what kind of music I make, my answer depends on the person asking the question. Most of the time, I just say "techno" or "house." Sometimes I say "minimal." And many times, I am blunt and say that I make "drug music."

We're Bay Area Beatdr_p and we're all about going beyond the boundaries of house and techno into INFECTIOUS BEAT MUSIC.

There are a lot of tribal bumpin' primal stripped down beats, some bleeps, clicks, glitches, some fxed vocals that say naughty things, some echoey-obscure bumps in the night, some very ambiant floaters that get caught on a treadmill and get washed over by a tidal wave into the great deep of tek-nastyness.

More details about this weekend's parties below.

We want you to take you on an body/soul journey into magictime and yes, it's all about the beats.
“Damian Lazarus plays the best underground records in the world" (DJ Magazine)

“Time to blow away the mediocrity. Time to bury the has-beens that have gripped the dance world. Damian Lazarus is leading the change. He is one of a small number of DJ’s delivering a fresh sonic surge of forward thinking music and new dancefloor perspectives. Best described as dirty and deep, this is electro house and much more besides. This is a Rebel sound designed for lovers of late night madness, future dance floor classics and cutting edge new ideas. Its time has come.

Damian’s DJing antics have taken him around the globe to some of the best underground parties. Always a lover of 'proper' music and not a fan of mainstream music machines, Damian Lazarus is a believer in giving people something exciting, special and different. For that he should be applauded.
------------------------------------
DJ Amok Profile:
----------------
Benjamin Arend, born 1981 in San Francisco, has always had his very own taste in music. Back when his classmates still sang along the Disney soundtracks, he listened to the works of Wagner and Beethoven and even learned how to play the violin. Unfortunately he had to give this up, in favor of his schoolwork. It wasn't until he had reached the age of 14, that he discovered pop which quickly lead him to trance and rave. At the age of 18 he began visiting the local techno clubs in Frankfurt and a few months later, after a tragic turn of events in his life, Dj Amok was born. This idea was all he had left, he had no money, no home, but the will to turn his crappy life to the complete opposite, to climb all the way from rock bottom to the very top. In the year that followed he started producing his first tracks and spreading them across the internet, where they where very successful on places like mp3.com. Now motivated to go all the way with this, he started creating his very own impression of techno and the sound his is known for today: extremely hard, agressive and thundering techno, dedicated to making the people go wild. As a Dj, he tries to explore the limits of just how far he can take the audience, and always tries to push the limits. Pushing the limits was also the goal of his first release on Giga-music and since it did very well, it helped open the doors for hardtechno to the labels and the market. In 2003, after the mark had been made, a whole new hardtechno scene emerged seemingly out of nowhere and has proven to be far more than just a hype. In the same year DJ Amok founded two labels: Artillery, best known for Amok's infamous Nightmare EP and Crowbar Recordings, which gives newcomers a chance to prove themselves. (taken from the biography on www.djamok.net)

FunkyCozy Halloween SF, Sat, Oct 29th w Scarlett Etienne - Free!

San Francisco’s best Halloween party is back for another year of madness. This year, we’re kicking it up another notch and bringing New York based Scarlett Etienne in on the fun!

As usual, no cover, and maybe we won’t kick you out if you’re not in costume, but what fun would that be? Get yourself an outfit and join the party. Don’t be that guy or girl who says “Damn, I wish I had dressed up.” Be the one who says, “Damn! I got the best outfit here!” Let’s see some crazy costumes!!

So, who is Scarlett Etienne? If you haven’t heard of Scarlett by now, then you don’t know what you’ve been missing. She’s toured all over the world, from Asia to Ibiza to all over the United States, while calling New York home. When we heard Scarlett would be in town, we jumped at the chance to bring her to FunkyCozy, and we know you’ll be as excited as we are by the time Saturday rolls around.

From her website:

Diversity is the heart of Scarlett’s sound. Her style can be described as electro-progressive with a funky and melodic edge. At only 23 years of age, Scarlett has acquired a unique, cultured appreciation and understanding of dance music and continues to make her impact on the underground house scene on a global level. While not working hard on the road, she is working diligently at home in her Pro-Tools project studio, continuing her quest to find expression through innovative new sounds.

For you curious peeps, you can listen to a set of Scarlett’s right here and find more information about her on her website at http://www.scarlettetienne.com

WHO: Scarlett Etienne and the Funky Cozy Crew (Sinukus, Jonathan Beech, and Tim McCormack)

WHEN: Saturday, October 29, 2005 from 9pm to 2am
